HORZUM Lead/Zinc SITE
Horzum lead-zinc ore is located in 3 km northwest of Horzum High Plateau. It is 100 km away from Adana and approximately 30 km from Kozan District. Kozan-Feke highway passes right nearby the site (east).
GEOLOGY
Geyik Mountain Unit also containing Horzum Pb-Zn site covers the carbonate and the clastic rocks belonging to Cambrian-Early Tertiary age interval. These rocks vary from the marl to the limestone in general.
Quaternary aged slope wash, upper Cambrian aged sand stone – shale, mid-Cambrian aged and mineralization containing limestone, and sub-Cambrian aged sand stone – silt stone are the general units of Horzum Region.
The mineralization of Horzum Pb-Zn site in general terms presents a formation close to Massive – Motley limestone contact and enriched in eastern-western faults.
OLD MINING
Horzum Pb-Zn site is a bed operated by Adana Corp. beginning from early 1970s. Previously high grade (>35% Zn) carboniferous mineralization had been produced and sold after the calcination. Lower grade (25-30% Zn) mineralization had been produced and sold to Çinkur. The flotation facility was established with sulphide mineralization production between the elevations of 780 and 770 and the sulphide mineralization had been enriched at this facility until the year 1997.
Total ore production is 900,000 thousand tons consisting of 500,000 (25-35% Zn) tons of zinc carbonate and 400,000 (7-14 % Zn) tons of zinc sulphure.
At Horzum zinc bed, the studies had been carried out for 6 months in the year 2001 after the year 1997 and 2 years between the years 2004 and 2006. Later in the year 2008, the ore had been produced through the gallery and stopped afterwards in Yaslankaya location.
EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION WORKS
Exploration and production works are continued in two sites, namely Horzum and Pınargözü in the region. A production of approximately 20,000 tons of zinc carbonate and 2000 tons of zinc sulphure has been made from the year 2013 until today. However, a zinc carbonate mineralization of 35,000 tons was determined in Horzum region and a carbonate zinc mineralization of 15,000 tons in Pınargözü site as a result of the exploration works and the exploration works are continued through 6 drilling machines.
